Welcome to Cox Sporthorses LLC
Hi there! My name is Caroline Cox, trainer here at Cox Sporthorses LLC. Growing up in Atlanta, I did not come from a “horsey” family. I took lessons and was an avid participant in horse camps. Once I outgrew being a camper, I was a camp counselor and as I got older I helped to coach some of the little kids at the barn. In high school, I evented two lovely horses (one of whom is my lovely lesson horse these days). The other horse, Braveheart, had a pretty pronounced sway back. In the process of trying to learn how to help him have more longevity in the sport, my love for riding as a sort of physical therapy for horses began. If I knew then what I know now, I am certain I could have been a better steward of him in those last few years. Instead, I carry all of the lessons I have learned since then with me. I try my best to apply them as I continue to learn how to better help horses use themselves.
During COVID, I began restarting thoroughbreds off the track. Anyone who was horse shopping in that era knows what the market was like (hot, hot, hot), horses were flying off the “shelves” like hand sanitizer and toilet paper. This meant that I had the opportunity to restart over 40 of them in about 18 months. Getting the chance to ride and sell so many different horses really allowed me to broaden my horizons.
These days, even though dressage is my discipline of choice I have the chance to work with an incredible variety of horses. In 2024 alone I’ve had rescue horses, Iberian horses, traditional warmbloods, thoroughbreds, Arab & Arab crosses, draft horses, and quarter horses come through my program. I have worked with jumpers who needed rehabilitation from being over faced, hunters who needed to gain hind end strength, pleasure riding horses, event horses, trail horses, horses who had been deemed suitable for behavioral euthanasia, and competitive dressage horses.
Young horses and “problem horses” are my passion. Young horses are such a gift to the equestrian world and starting/developing them is both an honor and a serious responsibility. Their lack of experience renders them some of the most honest partners. Seeing them grow into confident solid citizens is a true joy. Peeling back all the layers of “problem horses” and allowing them to let go of both mental and physical issues is challenging but deeply rewarding.
